David Abernethy, Chief Information Officer

Dave’s IT career spans over 20 years. Prior to beginning his career in IT, Dave served and retired as a United States Air Force (USAF) officer. While in the Air Force, Dave was recognized as the most junior United States Air Force Academy Commander, and was selected for promotion 2 years early, being recognized as the top 1% of the USAF.

Dave has had many key healthcare IT roles such as serving as the VP of Data Operations and Technology at CIVHC.org, where he managed the development, integration, operations and data delivery of over 750 million healthcare claims, covering 4.3 million unique lives, from all of Colorado’s 33 payers within Colorado’s All Payer Claims Database (CO APCD).  As CIVHC’s lead technology professional he, in less than 3 years, was key in tripling the organizations revenue and data products.  Additionally, as the lead technology professional at the Colorado Health Insurance Cooperative, Dave built from the ground-up a health insurance company serving the needs of over 15,000 Coloradans.  Lastly, as the Director of PMO, Dave managed the implementation of a $1.5 billion claims billing application for Kaiser Permanente.

He is one of only 500 CHIME Certified Healthcare CIOs (CHCIO), as well as a Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster and Product Owner, a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), MCSA, MCSD, MCP, MSS, ITIL Foundations V3, Siebel Customer Certified Consultant and Instructor, and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Yellow Belt and LSS Healthcare Green Belt. He has both undergraduate and graduate degrees with honors and is a frequent speaker involving an array of healthcare topics to a wide range of audiences, including speaking at the US Capitol.

Lastly, and most importantly, Dave is married and has a son, daughter, granddaughter and grandson.
